The saddest yet happiest day... Day 5

I know I was on a roll there for a bit, blogging each day, this one took a bit because well real life gets in the way sometimes. Also if I am honest I think I felt that once I blogged about day 5 then R ocklahoma was really in the past.

After a night of being soaked and rocking out to some of the best performances of the week we were up to the last day. The day my favorite band was due to play, Tesla. We had seen them in February and I have seen them 9 times prior to the show in Pryor. (ha ha, I crack myself up) My feet are still swollen at this point, but I had made it 4 days, what is one more?

We met up with the HOH staff when we got to the grounds and talked about what had gone on the afternoon before. Everyone was safe and that was what mattered most. The Bulletboys showed up for an interview and we got to listen in. I was impressed with Marq Torien's thoughtful and intelligent answers to some of the political type questions they were asked. I had been pretty impressed by most of the interviews that we got to listen in on. It is cool to know that these guys all are concerned with the world we live in like I am. Not that I thought that all rock stars live in their own little world, but you know some have that reputation. After the interview we were introduced and got to have pictures with the Bulletboys. Very nice bunch of guys.

We then got to meet Axe. I am still not sure if all 10 people that came in were in the band or not. I kid, but there was a bunch of them. I thought it was neat that one member had not only his child, but mom with them. Again, a great interview, nice bunch of guys. We did catch a bit of their show and saw them again in the VIP tent at lunch time. What really won me over though, was when one of the guys made a point to stop us and say hi to Chris, by name after only meeting us that once earlier in the day. I promise I am going to go out and find some Axe so next time we meet up I can ask them about some of their songs.

Zebra was the second band to take the stage that day, I was not familiar with them but they put on a good show for so early in the day. They like Axe, are added to my list of must finds and must learn more about list.

UFO was next and to me falls into the category that I put Triumph in. I only recognized Rock Bottom, and maybe one other song. The crowd was very in to them. I think they were excellent musicians. It was a treat when we were back with HOH and got to see a couple of them run off to try to get a sound byte from UFO and grab autographs too. I honestly get as excited for other people to get to see their favorites as I do to see mine.

Steelheart was the fourth band of the day. I was excited to see them, the buzz was that they were not going to be what I was expecting. They were the only band that had their own merch booth, which we had checked out earlier. I also can say I only knew of them from the "I'll Never Let You Go" days. Not that those were bad days. The intro they had with the fighter jet and Miljenko Matijevic driving his motorcycle out onto the stage was cool. Then the music started. Wow! They blew me away! They are so freakin heavy. The new stuff is awesome. I want to scream it to all my friends, you NEED to see this band LIVE!!! Just do it. Miljenko Matijevic is also very handsome, just so you girls out there know.

We didn't get to see the whole set, because we were called back to the HOH lounge for what would be the best part of Rocklahoma for me, we were going to get to meet Tesla!!!! If you have seen our pictures you will see I have a dopey grin in both. Yes, I was acting as dopey too. I let myself down. I was given a chance to ask anything I wanted and I couldn't put two words together. But back to the beginning. We were called back and got to the lounge just before Troy Luccketta and Jeff Keith walked in. My brain and coolness went out the backdoor. Chris and I were lucky enough to be able to sit with them during the interview and were allowed to ask questions too. Being so nervous I told them to put the mic to Chris. He is much better under pressure. He asked about their new song Private Ledbetter, which is a very patriotic and moving song. We told them about how we want to use the song If Only Words Could Explain for our upcoming wedding, and that was not kissing up, it was the truth. That song expresses a lot of what I feel for Chris. I think that is part of the reason that I love Tesla so much. I think they write a lot of songs that are real to life . If only I could have formed that sentence when I was there.

They talked a bit about the Station fund, which is something I wish all rockers would get on board with. I was also moved when Troy was speaking about is feelings about religion, it was refreshing to hear someone speak about what they feel without feeling like they are forcing it on you. I lost my dad some months back and felt like I had lost faith (not that I was church going to begin with) and after listening to what he was saying it gave me a sliver of hope.

After their interview we got to take pictures, which I booted Chris out of mine with Jeff, but we did get a group shot too. I did manage to tell Jeff that I am looking forward to his country album coming out. Yes kids, I like country music too, but that doesn't mean that I can't rock. They asked about when the date of our wedding is, and I promise you it will be sooner than later. We had planned it for this summer but with my dad gone it kind of took a backseat. However Chris did invite Troy and Jeff.

Ok, sorry for carrying on, but that was amazing! Troy and Jeff were just as you would imagine them, sweet, down to earth people.

After they left the lounge, Steelheart showed up. We watched their interview and got to hear about new avenues they are branching out into, like coffee and clothing. Miljenko Matijevic and his lady are both beautiful. Like they should be in commercials. Unfortunately you can't hate them for that as they are just as nice as they are beautiful. I know I keep saying that everybody is nice, but they really were. Not once over the 5 days did we meet a band or band member that was inconsiderate or so f'ed up that they couldn't be bothered with a fan.

We got back out to the stage area to catch the rest of Ace Freeley's set. Ace was my favorite KISS guy, I even dressed up as him one Halloween many many years ago. He did a lot more KISS songs than Ace solo stuff, which I thought was ok, but I just thought he would do more of his own stuff. My favorite was Cold Gin. Ace looked pretty good for his age and let me tell you, can rock with the hardest.

Chris and I had one last corn dog and cherry-lime aid from Karen's. They were tasty, but made me remember for the first time all day that this would be our last day here.

Woohoo, color me excited, it was time to get ready for Tesla to take the stage. I am not lying when I say they had the largest crowd of the week. They came out with Comin' Atcha Live and were they ever! It was one of the best Tesla shows I have seen. Not just because we had met them or because it was at Rocklahoma, but for real they were on. They took that stage and rocked everyone there. The crowd went especially crazy for Signs, Love Song and Heaven's Trail. Jeff had on a shirt from Hampton Beach, NH, I pulled Chris aside and said, I have seen them play there too! I have now seen Tesla preform in 4 different states. They did Gettin Better, which is one of my favorites, that was like the one question I managed to get out earlier, hey are you guys going to play Gettin Better? Gah! I am such a geek sometimes. Anyway it was a great performance, and so cool to sing along with Tesla as the sun went down.

We did get pulled away for about 5 minutes to go to the Queensryche press conference. I didn't complain any because that is Chris' band. He had so wanted to meet them, but we understand they have such an elaborate set up and stuff there really was no time. It was cool to get to sit in on their press conference, I kept elbowing Chris to go ask them a question when the group was allowed, but I think he was having a moment like I had earlier. Brain freeze. I did get a good laugh when some super fan got up and was complimenting them by saying Operation Mindcrime was even greater than the White Album. Not that I am a Beatles fan by any means, but even I know that that is a big stretch for comparison.

We went back one last time to the lounge after Tesla's set. We had a beer and raised our glasses (ie, cups) to our new friends. Not only had the HOH staff gotten ALL of our Tesla cds signed by the whole band, our program book signed by countless bands and band members, but someone (who I adore) got me a Tesla set list from the stage. I wanted to cry. How much nicer and cooler could anything get. I was also pleased to hear everyone saying how much they enjoyed Tesla's show. See, this is why they are my favorites. We hated too but had to say goodbye to the staff and Mark and Amy. Hugs and more pictures, and hopes to meet up and different shows someday.

It was time for the final band of the main stage. Queensryche. Luckily Chris had me watch the Operation Mindcrime dvd a few months back or I would have been confused. There stage show is amazing. The work that must go into putting on a show of that caliber shows what passion they have for what they do. I really did enjoy it live too. However, I don't know if that was a great way to end the festival. The die hard Queensryche fans were into it, I am not so sure about the fans that had been drinking, sunburned and soaked for 4 days already. However when they completed Operation Mindcrime they did about 5 of their "radio" hits. That went over much better with the whole of the crowd. Geoff Tate has an amazing powerhouse voice. I still don't get why some people think Silent Lucidity is a love song, but whatever, it is damn beautiful.

And with that Rocklahoma was over, or was it?

We knew the Bulletboys were due to take the stage in the back. We caught a couple of songs on the way out. They really do sound good still and seemed to have a good size crowd. I was just too tired, sad and sore to rock anymore. Wow I suck.

Got back to the hotel for a few minutes sleep. My feet, will they ever be normal again? Will our Rocklahoma mugs fit in my carry on? Will we get back to Rocklahoma 2009? Yes, Yes and I really really hope so. Until then, I have my pictures, memories and probably the only backpack that got autographed by Jim Bob the security man at the VIP entrance.
